Rank one phenomena for mapping class groups
Let Σg be a closed, orientable, connected surface of genus g ≥ 1. The mapping class group Mod(Σg) is the group Homeo(Σg)/Homeo0(Σg) of isotopy classes of orientation-preserving homeomorphisms of Σg. It has been a recurring theme to compare the group Mod(Σg) and its action on the Teichmüller space T (Σg) to lattices in simple Lie groups and their actions on the associated symmetric spaces. Indee...
متن کاملQuasi-isometric Co-hopficity of Non-uniform Lattices in Rank-one Semi-simple Lie Groups
We prove that if G is a non-uniform lattice in a rank-one semisimple Lie group = Isom(H2 R ), then G is quasi-isometrically co-Hopf. This means that every quasi-isometric embedding G → G is coarsely surjective and thus is a quasi-isometry.
متن کاملOn the Representation of Simple Riesz Groups
In this paper we answer Open Problem 2 of Goodearl’s book on partially ordered abelian groups in the case of partially ordered simple groups. As a consequence, we obtain a version of the Theorem of structure of dimension groups in the case of simple Riesz groups. Also, we give a method for constructing torsion-free strictly perforated simple Riesz groups of rank one, and we see that every dense...

— We explain our approach to the problem of counting rational points of bounded height on equivariant compactifications of semi-simple groups.
